NZ surf breaks will be protected by law.

"The nationally important surf spots - 13 in the North Island and six in the South - have been recognised and protected under the revised New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement, which comes into effect today."
"Mr Shanks, of Whangamata, said the spark for his involvement was the highly emotional battle between affluent home-owners and local surfers at his home break.
Surfers felt they were left out of the decision-making on a new marina, which many claimed had ruined the Whangamata bar since opening last year.
The statement came too late to protect consistent waves at the Whangamata break, he said."

Orca do a fine job 'mopping up' the Tauranga Habour stingray

A pod of orca has returned to Tauranga waters this week, delighting those who enjoyed their company last year.
He said the pods were attracted to the harbour by the stingray population, which was like "jellybeans" to orca.
"That's what the orca are coming for, to chase stingray in the shallow waters."

AKC Kiteboarding Raceday Postponed - Racing Now 27th November

Due to poor forecast for w/e of 20/21 the
Date is now set for Nov 27.

WindAddiction Facebook

"With not much knowledge on windsurfing racing protocol it was good to get the low down from Glenn Bright at the Wind Addiction AGM.

The course will be triangular with the start down wind of the first mark .So depending on how powered the conditions are and how far away the mark will be, a couple of tacks will be involved in getting there. After that its all off the wind with a broad reach to the second marker and then another to the finish. It sounds like a couple of laps will be involved and the biggest focus is on Fun! So set up your gear for running off the wind.
Glenn and Rod also told us some awesome stories of old.......windsurfing off the coast in cyclone Bola, slalom racing in cross off conditions at Tay St. Mega swims in at Papamoa with broken gear a kilometer out, broken bones and ripped tendons. It sounds like the harbour wasn't used much back in the day"

Sunday @ Fergy - Going off!

Thanks to everyone for crowing about downplaying the excellent sailing conditions on Sunday. The phrase; "Gotta change down and get back out!" was called out on more the one occasion, in my direction, and for my benefit I'm sure.
It seems like ever since the day my shoulder got screwed back in; the moon, sun, wind, tides and stars aligned for the rest of you.

WindAddiction to affiliate with Windsurfing NZ

"Bay of Plenty windsurfers are being welcomed to WindAddiction who will be affiliating with Windsurfing NZ, following in the path of the Canterbury, Southern Lakes and Southland clubs who are all combined wind sports clubs.
WindAddiction are the established kiteboarding club based in Tauranga, and have agreed to open membership up to windsurfers who are hoping to organise social and competitive events in the region. This gives the windsurfing community a quick start to getting events going, and since the sports have so much in common in terms of local resources and advocacy it can only benefit both sports. So if you sail in this region check out the WindAddiction website for more information on how to join. If you become a member of WindAddiction you will automatically qualify for free membership of Windsurfing NZ."

Proposed changes to the club logo have also been presented for consideration. I like it.

Provisional Race Notice - Details to be confirmed

AKC Competition Day is in the Pipeline! Saturday, 20 November 2010 @ Fergy/Harbour

"Alternate date: may be Nov 27
Format along the same lines as Queens Birthday event. Will run two classes Race and Twintip. In addition, would like to run a long distance beam reach (across the wind) race. This would have no upwind leg so anyone that can kite in a straight line could participate. Everyone in at the start.

After consultation with Race Organisers, the course set will be "windsurf friendly", (deep water). Depending on numbers, windsurfers' start may be staggered from kites. Updates to be posted on deefried.tv - BOP Sessions.

Dean's November Update

With the current lack of wind and blue sky weather thoughts are turning to “why didn’t I stay out for a longer session a few weeks back when I was overpowered and enjoying myself!” The long range El Nino weather forecast is promising some cyclone weather patterns but we will have to wait and see what turns up.
On the carnage side of things Darren bent a boom and broke a mast. Reports are that Craig has been seen buying a 430 mast , Mark is now the proud owner of a brand spanking new Naish CT boom and Rob continues his splurge of new gear that now includes a new Tushingham 7.8 X15. Andy can now extend his 430 RDM mast on his new Naish 45cm mast extension and base. Barry has gone carbon (well almost) with a brand new second hand Naish Global wave boom 50/50 Alloy and carbon.
But wait there’s more…..
A couple of fishermen in a tinny made a hasty retreat when a Great White longer than their boat tried to eat the outboard. Also there has been some fishing going on`s out in the harbour in the form of wakes complete with spray (similar to a windsurfing wake) from something under the surface accelerating even faster than Rob on his C/A…..

As much fun as you can handle, without the sail!

....and the physiotherapist,"highly" recommends this activity for my ongoing shoulder rehab. SUP riding is officially an  integral part of my 'prescribed' physical therapy. Excellent!

Hard work standing on the sidelines.

Some of the most consistent weather for quite a while. In spite all of the bruised bodies and damaged equipment, some fairly decent sessions are being 'racked up'.
Roll on the rehab....

Reports of tired bodies coming in....

I am reliably informed, that sails measuring 6.0m or less have been regularly dusted off over the last few weeks!
With this epic run of high wind windsurfing going on, some senior sailors are starting to comment on the state of their 'burnt out' bodies.
From one, who has to settle for spectating from the shoreline for a little longer,..."harden up fellas! I'm no GP, but surely that's why beer and anti-inflammatories were invented!"

Great run of Spring sailing, continues....

Association Under Construction

Presently canvassing local sailors and prospective association partners.
The intent; to co-ordinate windsurfing activities, raise the profile of the sport and promote a few quiet, post sailing beers social interaction within the region.
